GREAT BAG CO. was founded in 2014 by celebrity stylist and television personality Robert Verdi -- the company's iconic Model M. is a modern classic handbag for all. The Limited Edition Artist Series is in collaboration with prolific artists Mickalene Thomas, Dustin Yellin, Hank Willis Thomas, and Derrick Adams. 100% of the proceeds will benefit AFRICA'SOUT! and UHAI EASHRI. Each artist's design is a limited edition.

DERRICK ADAMS

DERRICK ADAMS is a multidisciplinary New York-based artist working in performance, video, sound and 2D and 3D realms.  His practice focuses on the fragmentation and manipulation of structure and surface, exploring self image and forward projection.

A recipient of a 2009 Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and 2014 S.J. Weiler Award, Adams received his MFA from Columbia University, BFA from Pratt Institute, and is a Skowhegan and Marie Walsh Sharpe alum. 

His exhibition and performance highlights include: Greater New York ‘05, MoMA PS1; Open House: Working In Brooklyn ‘04, Brooklyn Museum of Art; PERFORMA ‘05, ‘13, ‘15; Radical Presence & The Shadows Took Shape, Studio Museum in Harlem; The Channel, Brooklyn Academy of Music; and is in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Birmingham Museum of Art. 

His work can be seen in New York at Tilton Gallery; Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; Gallerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris; and Vigo Gallery London.

HANK WILLIS THOMAS

HANK WILLIS THOMAS is a photo conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to identity, history and popular culture. He has exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad and is in numerous public collections including The Museum of Modern Art New York, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Cleveland Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

His collaborative projects have been featured at the Sundance Film Festival and installed permanently at the Oakland International Airport, The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, The Oakland Museum of California, and the University of California, San Francisco. He is also a recipient of the New Media grant from Tribeca Film Institute and New Media Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography for his transmedia project, Question Bridge: Black Males. He was recently appointed to the Public Design Commission for the city of New York. Thomas is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City and Goodman Gallery in South Africa.

MICKALENE THOMAS

MICKALENE THOMAS is a distinguished visual artist and filmmaker who has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. She is best known for combining art-historical, political, and popcultural references to create striking figurative and non-figurative paintings. Her work stems from a long study of art history and classical genres of portraiture, introducing complex notions of femininity and challenging common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representation.

Thomas’s work is in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the Detroit Institute of Arts; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; Saint Louis Art Museum; Seattle Art Museum; and The Smithsonian American Art Museum.

DUSTIN YELLIN

DUSTIN YELLIN, born in California in 1975 and raised in Colorado, is a visual artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. In the past year, Yellin’s seminal Psychogeographies, have been commissioned for public exhibition at Kennedy Center in Washington DC and Lincoln Center in New York City for the New York City Ballet Art Series. A series of these sculptures were also installed permanently in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard. 

In 2010, Yellin founded Pioneer Works, a social sculpture and non-profit institute for art and innovation in Red Hook. Through a broad range of educational programs, exhibitions, performances and arts and science residencies, Pioneer Works seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide a space where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways.
