Grants and Programs

The primary focus of AFRICA’SOUT! grant-making is to advance radical change through the power of art and activism, particularly supporting artists, initiatives and institutions from Africa and its Diaspora that celebrate freedom of creative expression.

Grants are made to organizations doing ground-breaking work on the Continent for more inclusive communities. Individual artists are granted artist residencies and commissions. In partnership with Denniston Hill, founded by artists Julie Mehretu and Paul Pfeiffer and architectural theorist Lawrence Chua, AFRICA’SOUT! is supporting emerging artists from the African diaspora so they can successfully engage with more established artists, curators, and collectors.

Annually a grant is made to strengthen an artist’s work and support network. The Creativity + Courage Award is given to artists who have shown an abiding commitment to the freedom of creative expression, while having their own contested. The award is given at the annual AFRICA’SOUT! Celebration with a cash grant donated to an organization of the recipient’s choice

AFRICA’SOUT! promotes the myriad and powerful ways Art affects positive social change and emboldens people of African descent.
